Healthy Tongue, Healthy Body: Talking Yourself into Great Health

That same tongue that tastes your food is a key player in whether or not you live in a healthy body, and we're talking more than tasty foods here. We're talking tasty, savory words that may be as crucial to your health as the foods you consume.

Here is a scenario: The doctor gives you the result of the test, and it's not good. You have high blood pressure, just like one or more family members before you. The doctor stresses that you may not have long to live. He lectures you about how to change your lifestyle, particularly about how to eat differently.

Upon hearing what the doctor ordered, fear kicked in, and that fear begins to put diseased words on your tongue, as you echo the negative report of your doctor, with some melodrama of your own, added for effect. "I have high blood pressure. Aunt Mary suffered a stroke from high blood pressure and went into a coma. It runs in our family. It was the same thing that killed my dad. I guess I may die early like my dad. Pray for me..."

Words like those are the messenger of deteriorating health that beckons the spirit of death.

The Bible links my words to my health, and this is not just a spiritual thing. It is very much physical.

Proverbs 18:20-21 , “ A man's stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; from the produce of his lips he shall be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

God has given you the power to speak health and life, or sickness and death.

Proverbs 16:24 , “ Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”

Paraphrase: “The words you speak will affect what and how you feel on the inside. With your tongue you can speak sickness or health over your body.”

Let's return to the opening scene of this blog, but this time let's speak differently about the doctor's factual report: "The doctor says I have high blood pressure. I know several of my family members have suffered from the same disease. But I don't have to die early or go into a coma like they did. I will replace sugar drinks with purified water. I will eat organic, naturally-grown, whole-grain foods. I will become a better steward of my body, God's temple. With me and God on the same page about how to take care of my body, I will live out my days. I will not die early..."

Here is how this works, I think: When, with your words, you parrot the bad findings of your physician, you program your mind to go into despair mode, which lies at the lowest rung of life and living. That hopeless mindset then weakens your will to live, while it also undermines your body's immunity, the system that protects and defends your body against infection and disease. As your immune system lays down its arms to prevailing power of your words and mind, your body is conditioned for declining health at an ever faster rate.

The antidote is to switch from words of disease and death to words of life and health. Are healthy words magical? No, but they are practical and biblical. They are words of faith (belief), and it is a law of life that we often receive what we really believe. "I've heard that before," you say. Yes, but have you really applied it to your health? If not, it's time.

Healthy words may not work unless you have a healthy lifestyle to go with your healthy speech. Your healthy tongue should mean that you are doing what it takes to nourish your spirit, soul and body in the healthy ways we are talking about. To consistently consume unclean water, artificial drinks and junk foods, then speak health over your body is like trying to use your words to veto God’s laws of health. It just won’t work! You cannot bypass or violate God's health principles found in the Bible, and then make up for it with words devoid of works. First, line up your mouth and body with the principles and practices of biblical health, then consistently speak health over your body. As you flow with the Creator's health plan, your healthy tongue will summon a healthy body to follow, regardless of how scary the doctor's report. ~mogama~

I hear what you are saying - what comes out of our mouths should line up with the truth of God's Word. Having said that God is still sovereign - there are many times when he hasn't given me what I prayed but said no. (thankfully) I have had friends who went to the extreme of never saying they were sick - the Word says WHEN you are sick to call for the elders of the church to pray for you so that you might be healed - the one lady was diagnosed with pneumonia but wouldn't say anything except she was home catching a healing - so she couldn't get that effective prayer because she wouldn't state reality (she had pneumonia and needed healing) i am sure you have encountered this too. SO good balance - I think you did a good job of stating what the fellow in the example could have said instead of doom and gloom.

THANKS for sharing this one. With my latest diagnosis I have been saying I have a diagnosis of breast cancer - actually the piece I wrote today was the first time I said "I have breast cancer..." My surgeon said they might have gotten it all in the biopsy and I say that our Lord might have healed me so maybe I don't really have it any more - ah, me, strange times lately....
