The iPad: Why We Are Not Buying an Apple iPad

I don't like to review products whether they be books, furniture, automobiles, or electronics. I'm just not good at reviewing products. And I don't think this current piece qualifies as even a poor product review. I'm simply registering my disappointment with a less-than-expected product.
The hype about Apple's iPad was so loud and frantic, it was beyond the noise of a president or celebrity coming to grace a small town with her presence. But like the common celebrity anti-climax that we've gotten used to, Steve Jobs' new gadget hits the market with a prolong phooo, like air slowly leaking out of a birthday balloon. That's possibly a first for Apple products that have until now revolutionized electronics a few times. The iPad is no iPod or iPhone. Maybe Apple has outlived their ability to pull off game-changing products. If so, that's OK. They've done their part, and no one expects them to keep pulling gadget stunts.
For good reason. Mr. Steve Jobs touted the iPad as a device that would bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops. Besides Mr. Jobs, few of us out here are convinced that the device, as it currently is, can live up to that promise. For instance, a wireddotcom poll found 71 of readers say no thanks' to the iPad. They're keeping their iPhones, Blackberry, whatever smartphone models they've been using.
One of the biggest errors about this product is its silly name that can't get our minds off the feminine monthly cycle. It seems Apple's prelaunch secrecy became a liability this time. Did Steve Jobs forget to float a trial balloon about what to call the cutie? "We're calling it iPad. What do you think, ladies?" A swell of gals' giggles would have greeted the CEO and quaked the gathering of Apple insiders huddled under the dark of night somewhere in Techy Universe.
But beside the feminine-insensitive aspect of the iPad, from what I've read thus far, this gadget is missing some important functions that gadgetites have come to expect. No Adobe Flash Player for a device that is supposed to be about the web? Really? No USB port too? OK? What else is missing? And Apple expects me to lay down my Blackberry Storm or my Acer laptop for one of these pads?
I anticipate soon-to-appear copycats will more than surpass the iPad shortly. The Chinese, Japanese and South Koreans, not to mention RIM will probably come up with something that has more relevant functions and a friendlier name too.
And, no, I haven't met anyone who really believes that the iPad will save the newspaper industry from being ancientized by the pervasive Internet. I'm not impressed enough to renew my newspaper subscription, not when I'm getting free news online via my laptop or Blackberry (when I decide to restore its Internet service).
Frankly, the only pad I'm buying these days will be the ones I was buying before the iPad hype: the training pad that Mattie our puppy pees on, and the other kind that my wife whispers to me when she forgets the thing during her weekly grocery trip.
Can somebody out there convince me to fall in love with the iPad, please?

Top-level comments on this article: (6 total)My thoughts exactly. The smartphones slide right into your pocket and are loaded with features and functions. The iPad, (snicker, snicker), is too big to be conveniently portable.Good stuff here!Yes, Ken, I know we're not alone in our not-that-impressed response to Apple's iPad. ~mogama~
thanks for the article. You're very welcome, Marie. Is the sun shining bright and warm in the Philippines? We've got snow & freezing temperature over here in Kentucky. Thanks for your comment. ~mogama~
It's very warm during noon and afternoon but during dawn and early morning, its very very cold, at least here in the place where I'm living. I'm living here in Baguio City. It's on top of a hill and it has one of the coldest temperature here in the Philippines :) Temperature reaches about 7 degrees Celsius which is very cold here in the Philippines but nothing compared there :)Thanks, Marie, for taking the time to tell me more about the temperature where you are in the Philippines. ~mogama~
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I was considering the i pad but i never buy anything that is new to the market. I wait for feedback. Thanks again. Linda DThanks, Linda, for your comment. Like you, for now I'll admire the iPad from afar. One of these days, I may grab a refurbished one just to soothe my curious buds. ~mogama~
You are right about all of the hoopla. The iPad is supposed to be a touchscreen laptop, yet those who have the iPod and iPhone already have all of the tools needed. Sure, a touchscreen laptop is a nice idea, yet Apple (and Steve Jobs specifically) forgot one basic fact: there are only so many toys with which a human can travel.Nicely done, sir."there are only so many toys with which a human can travel." Exactly, Mr. Ramzy. The whole new revolutionary gadget thing is getting a little worn out. Thanks for your input. ~mogama~
Well your honest review of the ipad had me reeling in surprise over the absence of a Adobe pdf reader!how can apple do that and the exclusion of the USB port is also too great a crime to commit ! Well the ipad's off my gadget list for sure atleast until unless it arrives back on steroids or something !!Thanks, Ravi, for your comment. I think it's the Adobe flash player that is missing from the iPad, not the pdf reader. ~mogama~
