Have you ever wondered how to make a sound New Year's Resolution? I have. I searched the Internet for sample New Year's Resolutions, and they were hard to come by. The best I found was an article by Wayne Parker. Perhaps I was not using the right search engine, or I did not sift through enough of the search results to find what I was looking for. So I decided to begin a list of sample New Year's Resolutions for other web surfers who need to see a good sample of a New Year's Resolution.
But first, let's remember that a sound New Year's Resolution should have the following 12 ingredients:
- Like a goal that is worth your time and effort.
- Positive, expressing something you want to do rather than something you want to avoid.
- Challenging, which means it is not too easy for you to achieve.
- Reasonable; it must be possible to achieve. That means you have the means or what it takes to reach your goal.
- Written. A promise in writing is more serious than a verbal one. Even car salespersons know this; they won't let you drive a car off the lot with a verbal promise.
- Measurable. You can tell whether you are making progress. You can measure how well you're doing.
- Specific. Pick only one area that you want to change.
- Targeted. The goal should be related to or contribute to your mission or purpose in life.
- Consistent with the rest of your life. It makes little sense to have an NYR that contradicts your other life goals or activities.
- Deadline. Attach a time frame that indicates when you will have achieved the goal or an aspect of it.
- Binding. Hold yourself to the written promise you've made, equal in force to any other written contract.
- Visible. Once you write it down, put it on your refrigerator or on your mirror, where you can see it almost every day.
- I will read a portion of the Bible every day, starting with the Gospel of John.
- I will pay $100 or more per week towards debts until I have paid off all debts.
- I will walk at least thirty minutes for at least five days a week.
- I will drink purified water from the health food store and 100% fruit juices instead of soda pops and other artificial drinks.
- I will take herbal vitamins and supplements every day.
- I will eat whole-grain, organic, natural foods instead of junk foods, so I can become more healthy and lose weight as a result.
- I will take my wife on a date one night a week.
- On the last Saturday of each month, I will take one of my children out to spend at least one hour together.
- I will cut my cigarette smoking down to one pack a day by January 31 and half pack a day by Mary 31, so that I can be completely cigarette-free by December 31.
- I will attend church for my spiritual development every Sunday morning.
- I will attend my son's basketball game whether in town or out of town, unless the game conflicts with my work hours.
- I will fast one day a week for spiritual and health reasons.
