Golf World Shocker: Tiger Woods Quits Golf to Become Family Man

With the statement posted by Tiger Woods on Friday, December 11, the shock waves have just begun. But given the intensity of worsening revelations, one should have expected something serious underway, either from Tiger himself or from his corporate sponsors. It is better that the big news came from Tiger himself. The following statement from Tiger lacks any trace of blame for his actions; he takes total responsibility:

"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."

If there is a loser in Tiger Woods' hiatus from professional golf, it has to be the world of golf. And the winner is...Elin Woods, the children, and the entire Woods family. I wish Elin stays with him.

Some may not see it as such, but I consider this a huge sacrifice on Tiger's part. He could have probably chosen to tough it out through the muddy swamp of his confessed transgressions, sexual promiscuity to be exact.

It is my prayer that Mr. Woods will also expand his quest for redemption beyond sexual transgressions. Long before his sexual exploits became news, there have been reports of Tiger's dirty sex jokes, not to mention his outburst of profanity on the golf course at times. Few sports journalists have reported on the dark side of Tiger, but they were largely ignored, until the 2:25 AM car crash removed the lid off the golfer's mystique.

Nevertheless, with this clean admission, total owning of responsibility, and clear plea for forgiveness, it is only appropriate that we extend nothing but compassion to a fellow fallen human being. Humility is all that was needed from this mega celebrity who used to be a stranger to meekness.

Regardless of how long Tiger is gone from professional golf, may a more humble family man emerge from this fall, a man that can add to his life mission the need to steer youngsters to be sexually responsible and more respectful of women. May he champion the message that no amount of money or fame should give any man the right to see women as sex objects to be used or talked about as such. My prayer for Tiger is nothing less than total transformation, knowing full well I need that myself.

It is very likely that Tiger recovers from this breakdown and rise once again to dominate the greens, but no crystal ball can be adamant about that at this point.

Mogama, you state the truth in a tactful way and you issue a vote of confidence to the effect that this young man is being fully sincere and honest about his commitment to family healing and loyalty.

Tiger Woods made a huge mistake and I think in the end he can learn from his mistakes.
