It's hard for me to fathom Mr. Robertson's (or anyone's, actually) justification for his ignorant statements. It is also beyond belief people not only listen to his stuff, but believe it as well. Thanks for shining what is hopefully a glaring spotlight on one of our societies most basic problems: complete idiocy. Well done, sir.

Sad but true, Michael. This man has many followers through his 700 Club television show. I used to watch his show until he called Charles Taylor, Liberia's human blood-drunk warlord a Spirit-filled Christian. With Rev. Robertson the perpetrator usually gets a pat on the back, and the victims get slammed. ~mogama~

Mogama, good article. My husband and I were talking about this just last night. I believe Pat Robertson's statements would be more credible if Jesus had never come to the world. With Jesus comes personal responsibility and a personal relationship. We are thankfully alloted much grace and mercy and not held to what previous generations said and did for our spiritual state. To bring God into this tragedy is a mockery of him, in my opinion. It is saying these people are cursed because of what someone did or did not do years ago. If that is the case, then why bother to help or encourage them? They are already doomed. I don't know for sure, but I imagine Rev. Robinson's charities are sending aid. Why are they bothering if what he says is true. Just my 2 pennies of thought.

What an insight, Lorrie? Yeah, if as the preacher said, the Haitians deserve this as servants of Satan, why would Pat Robertson's "Operation Blessings" (his charitable organization) want to help the devil's people and interfere with God's plan for those who serve the devil? Great observation. ~mogama~

Mogama,

Thank you for a wonderful article.  I have difficulty believing that anyone (let alone Robertson) could actually think something so inane and further say what he did.  Lord have mercy on that man's soul!

Sadly, Nancy, there are Haitian church leaders who agree with Pat Robertson. Go figure! Thanks for commenting. ~mogama~

I believe Pat Robertson is the one who has ties with the devil to say such things.

Yeah, David, you may be closer to the truth than you think...Rev. Robertson had his hands in blood diamonds from Sierra Leone, our (Liberian) neighbors to the west of our country. Money from those diamonds were used to buy weapons that killed tens of thousands in Sierra Leone and Liberia. To this day, there are hundreds of Sierra Leonean children maimed from the war...limbs chopped off...things like that. So sad for a man of God... ~mogama~

A really great, informative article. I agree with the others about what an insensitive statement that was and I don't think anyone should have said it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi there, Linda. Thanks for reading and gracing us with your comment. I wish the Reverend would be concerned not only about making cruel comments in the face of people in agony but also about the truthfulness of his words. He said a similar thing about our country (Liberia) when we were really hurting from the actions of a warlord: after Charles Taylor had massacred thousands of Liberians, Pat Robertson went on television and called Taylor a genuine born-again, Spirit-filled Christian man who has been slandered. ~mogama~

First of all, unless the Rev. is a prophet, a Moses or Isiah, he's not getting direct revelation from God on this "insight." And for those of us who are not, we know that God's ways are not our ways and His thoughts are of a superior, complex, and far seeing nature. To know the mind of God is to be called of Him or to be equal to Him, a god yourself. I don't think Robertson is either. And what about some of the most heinous crimes committed by man? For instance Hitler. He miraculously avoided 15 attempts on his life and believed this was because he was called of God to perform his "mission." Now there's something for Mr. Robertson to think about.

Thanks, Jeff, for sharing what Adolf Hitler thought of his many escapes from assassination. It's so easy to claim God for oneself and to cast others on Satan's side. As Jesus put it, the ultimate proof that one knows the true God is love that translates into compassion for those in need. ~mogama~

I agree that,Mr. Robertson's comments whether true or false ( only the people there at that time would know) were not needed. He should have offered Prayers What I noticed is so many talking about Pat, who sent $$Millions$$ to Haiti's, but not a word about Danny Glover that blamed it all on global warming. Now that's insane.

Thanks, Michael, for commenting. The "pact with the devil" myth was NOT invented by Pat Robertson; let's be clear about that. This article is solely about whether or not there is any truth to the legend. Until someone finds the iron pig statue that supposedly commemorates Haiti's deal with Satan, it is reasonable to deem the story a fabrication, especially so when evidence has been found to the contrary. I do see your point, though. ~mogama~

Great article. Well done.

If only the world would ignore Pat from planet Robertson. He is clearly an idiot. Besides the devil is most probably made up just like Pat Robertsons sanity.

Thanks, Connor, for commenting here. Unfortunately, Rev. Robertson is not the only one who believes this myth that has been found to be untrue. ~mogama~

Humans seem to always need to find someone or some thing to blame, don't they? A way of making themselves feel superior?

I do have to take a bit of an issue with your statement that the Jews were "partly" to blame for Christ's death. They didn't stand behind him, but it was the Roman government that issued the death sentence. Those in authority rarely stand behind a rebel, and in his time, that's exactly what he was to many people.
